Journey to America
In this course, I started experimenting with blended learning by designing an online component to a literature unit I taught about immigration called Journey to America.
Our focus was to understand the immigrant experience by reading immigrant narratives. My students’ summative assessment required them to write a first person narrative from an immigrant character’s perspective. I designed the website to reinforce the literacy skills I explicitly taught in class while exposing students to immigrants’ stories. Follow this link to check out the website I created.
Sorry About the Wall
After completing this course, I decided to add an online component to another unit I teach
called Sorry About the Wall. In short, students learn about graffiti art and vandalism and analyze how both can help or hurt a community. At the end of the unit, students create a digital graffiti mural using Graffiti Creator that they believe will help their community. Students write an artist’s statement justifying their design decisions and explaining the benefits their graffiti mural will bring to their community.
